Most Chinese are on the way home to celebrate one of the most important days in the traditional Chinese calendar–Mid-autumn Day. Do you know the folklore behind the festival?
According to one of the most popular versions, the Goddess of Heaven bestowed upon Hou Yi, a valiant archer, a pill that would grant immortality. Hou Yi’s wife Chang’e ate the pill and found herself becoming so light that she finally floated up to the moon, a place she couldn’t leave any more. Her husband, however, remained on earth. Legend has it that Hou Yi visits his wife when the moon is full and at its brightest.
Chinese culture honors the moon as a symbol of peace, prosperity and family reunion. People cherish this festival to get together with their family no matter how far away they are from home.
