Problems in The Production of Crystal Glass Arabesque Mosaic

In 2014 and 2015, mosaics with the lantern pattern have been extremely popular, and no matter what its texture is- crystal glass, stone material or ceramic- it has been highly admired by customers. But the production of crystal glass lanterns in China at present are not mature enough to deal with the main problems of a complicated operation, low yield high cost, etc.
Currently, there are mainly two types of lantern production techniques. They are:
Type one is to cut a glass sheet with a water knife, to color the cutting lantern particles, and finally to founding in furnace. The two methods of coloring are to spray with spray gun and to paint with a silk net.
The problems with this type of technique is the high operative difficulty index, low yield and strict control of color aberration. It will cause serious color aberration when spraying or painting with silk net (there’s nearly no color aberration in producing super white), and it requires a great deal of oversight from the operators as manual operation needs highly skilled workers in the factory, otherwise the quality can’t be guaranteed.
Its advantage is the low production cost. Because it has to make up for the problem of low yield by reducing the cost, the cutting speed of a water knife is quite fast but leaves obvious cutting marks which needs to be covered by a big welding edge.
Based on the above situations, quality control should pay special attention to the inspection of the color layer which has many defects, as the color layer may have the issue of thin silk net, that is, the color layer is too thin to cover. Moreover, the welding edge shouldn’t be too big, otherwise it will affect the overall paving effects of the lantern.
Type two is to produce large-sized crystal bricks such as 300mm x 600mm, to cut the lantern particles with a water knife, and founding in furnace again.
The problems with this type of technique is the high cost and high process requirements which are to produce crystal glass bricks maturely. At present, many factories of crystal mosaic don’t have a qualified process to produce large-size glass bricks, which is the main problem in restricting the production technique. The high cost is mainly due to the second time it is founded in the furnace as an extra process.
Its advantages are simple operation, high yield and good control of color aberration. Basically, there is no major problem if the crystal bricks’ production reaches the standard.
The key point of this approach is to control the cutting of the water knife. Fast cutting should be avoided as it can leave obvious marks on the edge; otherwise, it would be wasted since the marks on the edge can’t be melted in the furnace.
The above are the advantages and disadvantages and key control point of the two production modes. Personally, I prefer the latter one as it is a simple operation and doesn’t require too much for, the workers and its quality can be guaranteed. Besides, it is a level higher than the former one, suitable for the choice of high-end products.
